• Xslt Xml & XhtmlOk so I am working on a project at work that involves XSLT. I struggling through it here as I have very little knowledge on it. I would like to know of any good resources for learning this technology or any good books one can recommend. I hate books that talk on a very technical level. Rather ones that explain in simplistic terms, what it does, what I can achieve and where its best applied. I know of a CMS called Symphony that uses this technology in its templating system, but I am unsure why its so powerful as opposed to normal CSS / XHTML? My understanding so far is that if you have data in XML form you can transform it into XHTML through XSLT. I think it also seperates some of the programming logic from the display layer. Any clarification would be appreciated. Cheers, Source: IrishWebMasterForums |

• Netresults.ie - ChancersGot this today... Anyone heard of these? I just got an email from someone telling me that you received a blank email from me. I apologise for this, I can't think why this happenned :-( Here is the original email I sent out that you were meant to receive. Hi XXXXX, My name is Stephen Fasenfeld of Net Results and I came across your website www.xxxxx.ie (http://www.xxxxx.ie) in the Golden Pages the other day and saw that you are advertising in Computer Maintenance & Repairs How would you like a f.r.e.e. review of your web site done on video which Net Results will send to you within 72 hours. To get your review just go here Search Engine Optimisation|Search Engine Marketing|Website Optimisation Services (http://www.netresults.ie/video-review.html) You see myself and my business partner Brian Clarke have been reviewing web sites for the past 5 years showing people how they can get more visitors to their sites and also how you can turn those visitors into buyers which can impact hugely on your bottom line. Now, it doesnt matter whether you are selling a product or a service, web sites are one of the best ways of generating leads or making sales. You just have to know how to do it and we will show you how in your f.r.e.e. web site video review. Hardly anybody else is doing this and the net results are phenomenal. We normally charge 75 Euros for these reviews as they take quite a bit of work from our end. However, for a very limited time, you can get your own video review for f.r.e.e. We highly recommend that you take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity. All you have to do is go to Search Engine Optimisation|Search Engine Marketing|Website Optimisation Services (http://www.netresults.ie/video-review.html) and fill out the information so we know where to send the video review. Regards Stephen Fasenfeld PS. You will walk away from this review looking at how to get leads and making sales from your web site in an entirely different light. This is cutting edge information which nobody else is sharing. Source: IrishWebMasterForums |

• Web AwareThere is an interesting article in this months edition of “Smart Company” called Web Aware. Many of the posters on this forum contributed to the article. I was interested to see the different opinions expressed in the article, especially between Web Hosts and Web Developers. One Irish web host is quoted as saying “It’s expensive and annoying to deal with web designers” As this is a webmaster forum, how many of you out there would class themselves as annoying? In my opinion Tom Doyle actually rescued the article in favour of the Web Design / Development industry. What’s your opinion of the article? . Source: IrishWebMasterForums |

• Introducing Webgains.ieHi everyone, My name is Kier and I'm an Account Manager at Webgains. We're an affiliate network, initially founded in London but we've now expanded across Europe (France, Germany, The Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden so far) and we've recently put live our Irish platform: Webgains.ie (http://www.webgains.ie/). Following a chat with Michele I've come here to say hi, explain what we're all about and start building up relationships with you guys. Currently there are two programs live for you to promote specifically on the Irish platform: Envirofone (http://www.webgains.ie/signup.html?programid=1206) and Electric Shopping (http://www.electricshopping.ie/) and we have plenty more that we're currently integrating so I'll be letting you know as and when new programs go live. You can of course also promote any of the other merchants that we have on the various regional networks should you have relevant traffic available. To tell you a little bit about what we're all about_: *Account Management - *Each account manager specialises in several sectors and deals with all programs within those sectors. This means if you're big in lead gen for example, you can quickly get recommendations on the best programs we have currently going and your AM will have a good understanding of the market in question. We also do not split our account management staff into separate teams for merchants and affiliates, we all deal with both sides of the relationship to ensure a thorough understanding of the issues involved. *Technology* - Our tracking is extremely reliable and can track orders even where cookies have been deleted or blocked. Affiliates have reported this can mean up to 10% more orders are tracked when compared with other networks. We always strive to ensure you have the best quality product feeds available and map all merchant categories to our own category tree for consistency. We've also recently introduced tracking functionality specifically to deal with voucher code promotions which offers a lot of flexibility in running exclusive offers for individual affiliates and can even be used for offline promotion. All merchant news, promotions etc. are published on our blog where you can get RSS feeds to stay up to date with everything that's going on. Naturally there's more I could say but I'll keep it brief ;) I'm very interested to get to know you all and build up productive relationships so please don't hesitate to get in touch and let me know what I can do for you. • LetsHost Support DowntimeI've used LetsHost.ie for a number of years without any major issues, however over the past week or so their live help seems to be closed, and no responces via their ticket system. It seems a little strange, and given the fact I need to move a hosting account before I am forced to pay an extra year, I want to transfer it to an account I have with LetsHost. Would it be that they are just taking an extended Easter Holiday or perhaps is there another reason for their continued downtime/delay on support? Source: IrishWebMasterForums |

• Ok So I Went Crazy - Review My Design SiteHi Guys, I have finally designed a site I am fairly happy with. Keep in mind I am a student, I am still learning, but I do try, the site is of much higher standard (code wise) than what I have cherned out before and I just kinda want to get some rung on the ladder. I don't really want big corporate clients, I just want the website to be different and creative as well as accessible. In other words please don't be too brutal. As Forbairt will see I have decided to leave the CMS backing aside and go back to getting basics right. The site is Things2do Ireland - Innovative Solutions For Innovative People - New Age Digital Media Firm (http://www.things2do.ie) which has gone through a few lifes but now has a name with my few clients and I'm happy to keep the oddly named domain. Basically I want the site to be: 1. Different, unique, a bit odd, visually captivating. 2. Valid to W3C standards, most of the site seems to be. 3. Appeal to a younger audience, aim at doing artists, bands, etc websites. (That is what interests me more). 4. Preforms well in search engines. A lot of work has to be done, the old website is still appearing, so I'll be taking that down soon. 5. Not be too professional / off putting to target market above (I like dealing with people like myself a lot and hope to attract them to it). 6. Obviously be a site which creates work for myself in some minor part-time form, I'm a bit wedged for time as it is, but always worth being too busy. Things I know aren't the best: 1. The homepage is dodgy, very OTT and in general will be smoothed out with time, I might even do things with it over the next day or two. 2. Is pink a good colour to use given the photo contrast, any suggestions. 3. DW templating, does it work well for SEO? Any creative critism is welcomed, as I said before I want it to be very odd and different, I'm a one man enterprise outside of my contracted work and I'd like to reflect my madness in the site :) ;) :) Thanks, Baz Source: IrishWebMasterForums |

• Ridicilious amount of spam recentlyAnybody else getting more than the usual in the past week or so? I have had to moderate about 40 spam comments in the last few days which escaped the various anti-spam plugins I have installed on Wordpress. Generally I only need to manually moderate about 5 comments a week. Anybody in the same boat as me? Source: IrishWebMasterForums |

• A few questionsI am not a freelancer, but am preparing to become one, and have a few questions for the novices to put my mind to rest!! If I base myself in Ireland, is there any charges for doing work for someone in USA or someone in say, Zanzibar? What method of payment do you all use? Which is better/secure? Is PayPal good? or cheques? In Ireland, how often would you come across a client who refuses to pay, or turns into roger the dodger? Because I've read from a previous thread on this forum that clients here are notorious for it..? Is hosting your clients site the best way for collateral until you receive final payment? Is there an essential must have book that gives you all the information you need for doing business in Ireland, copyright issues (for Ireland), samples of contracts you can use, samples of all other legal documents??? A client has a business and doesnt have a website. He contacts you throught email and asks you to design a site. The name of his company is "XYZ". You've never heard of XYZ before, and you complete the site for him. What would happen if XYZ already existed and the client was breaking some copyright law, would you be also in the wrong ie could any legal action be taken against you for designing a logo for XYZ and a website?
