A friend of mine has a high street shop, and in talking about his business, I suggested to him that having a website with an online shop might be a good way to increase business. He loved the idea. Currently he currently talking to suppliers about bringing in some new products and they can easily be sold online.

I'm going to help him do it so I want to do some research into how best to achieve this, and what solution is most suitable to out needs. The jey is "Easy" - easy to build, update and manage etc. I have been looking at OsCommerce as it seems like a popular solution - this site (http://www.discs.ie/) is a great example of the type of thing we are looking for. Anyone have experience with using it?

I know from another thread that there are alternatives. Can anyone tell me if they would recommend any others over OsCommerce, and specifically why?

Search Engine Optimisation is very important. How do I ensure my shopping cart website is seo compatible?

Someone else said I should take a look at Shopify (http://www.shopify.com) - I had never seen this before but it looks like a fantastic idea! Easy to set up and maintain, not have to worry about the server side, good support, and all the integration already done. The only thing that concerns me is the fact that this is an Irish site and shopify might be quite Americanised...

Any other suggestions or tips for me? I'd really appreciate any advice you can give me on this.
Thanks!

I am currently working on building a website through Dreamweaver (HTML)and incorporating elements of Flash. Designing and building this is no problem....my problem is that I will need it to be a full e-commerce website with shopping cart, SSL and secure payments, PayPal option, etc...I cannot implement this feature into my site myself as I find it too technical. I have looked at the OS E-commerce options available online and find them too technical to incorporate to my site personally. It would also be important that the E-Commerce (shopping cart) feature would have the same 'look and feel' (same design) as the rest of the site as it would look unprofessional if the two looked totally different. Is there anyone out there who could do this job for me?
Please contact me if you have the knowhow...

I am about to develop my first eCommerce site and I have a few questions. I come from a software development background, but with a good level of experience with web based systems and techniques. I wouldn't call myself an absolute expert with PHP, but I know when I understand the problem and the solution, I will be able to implement it in code successfully.

I have been looking at the likes of ZenCart and OSCommerce and I just don't like the hassle that goes with mashing my own design templates in to them. I would like to be able to create my own site (with strict markup), with a CMS driven catalog. That users could simply drop items in to a shopping cart (session), and when they go to the checkout I simply send the payment information to the likes of realex for processing.

Is this possible?, or is there tonnes of functionality in the likes of the above open source offerings that I would need to replicate. I would really like to do at least one site this way so I know I can do it myself.

So what's to it? What functionality would I need. My first client is only selling to customers in Ireland, so the Euro is the only currency I will be dealing with, along with Irish VAT rates, etc. Although I'm sure if that were to change it would be simple enough to add them in to the system (or am I being terrible naieve).

Also if I use something like Realex to process the payment data do I still need to host the actual site with a dedicated IP and SSL (+ certificate), or is all the privacy of sensitive data transmission taken care of by the payment processor. Of course I wouldn't store the customers payment details in the website database (just shipping information).

I appologise in advance if I am making jaws drop with my ignorance on the subject, but I am eager to make a start on this project and would prefer start with a blank screen and my own programming knowledge than have to force someone else's code work for me.

<date_added>2008-04-30 02:59:09 GMT</date_added>
E-commerce

Anyone used secpay to process cards online

Hi All,

I am creating a trading/selling website. Something similar to ebay/adverts.ie (depending on the below!), though just within a certain market. Basically I want users to be able to sell items on the site.

I have got my hands on PHP Auction Enhanced 2.51 which includes the ability to charge the seller a commision based on what they sell the item for.

I now don't know if the auction site was a way to go, or if this one is the right one. I have noticed other sites like adverts.ie have forums to sell items as apposed to an auction. This still gives the buyers to place bids, but i would need control over collecting payments for the sold items. Whether or not there is a listing fee or sale commision would depends on the script. Maybe I am better off creating something like the sitepoint.com marketplace?

Any advice? Auction vs Forum based sales (so like ebay vs adverts.ie!)...
